Return to School 08/03/2021

1st March 2021

Dear Parent/Carer

This letter is to set out how pupils will return to school from March 8th 2021.  I will also explain how the testing will happen during the first two weeks, how the curriculum will be delivered and changes to the school’s protocols.

Firstly, the phased return and testing.  This is set out in the table below:-

DATE TESTING IN SCHOOL
March 8th Year 11 – test & go home
March 9th Year 10 & 9 – test & go home Year 11 start full time
March 10th Year 8 & 7 – test & go home Years 9 & 10 start full time
March 11th Year 11 – test in school Years 7 & 8 start full time
March 12th Year 10 & 9 – test in school
March 15th Year 8 & 7 – test in school
March 16th Year 11  – test in school
March 17th Year 10 & 9 – test in school
March 18th Year 8 & 7 – test in school
March 19th Catch up Day – test in school

Please also see the table at the end of the letter showing what time your child should attend for testing by way of Form Group.

All pupils that have consented will have 3 tests during the first two weeks at school.  For their first test they will come in to school for the test and then go straight home.  Providing they receive a negative result to their first test they will then start full time the following day (as above).  Parents/pupils will only be contacted if the test result is positive.  A further two tests will take place where pupils are removed from class on the dates set out above to perform the test and then return to class.  If your child is not being tested their start date is when their year group is due to start full time. (eg. Y11 is March 9th).  Please contact Head of Year if you have any questions.

Secondly, the delivery of the curriculum.  From the 8th March Philips will return to its “normal” timetable (ie. five lessons per day) in year group bubbles as before.  Some lessons will be still on SMHW and others on Teams up to Thursday 11th March, this is the date when ALL pupils will be back in school and all lessons return to normal.   Vulnerable pupils and those children of key workers who are already attending school will continue to do so as normal.  They will be attending their normal lessons in the classrooms on their timetable from Monday 8th March.  We will inform the pupils and parents separately regarding these arrangements.

Finally, the School Protocols. These have been updated and are available on the School Website.  IT IS CRUCIAL THAT THESE ARE READ AND UNDERSTOOD.  There have been some changes, a couple of VERY important points including:-

  • Face Coverings – are now recommended to be worn at all times in the school building and in classrooms. Pupils and staff will wear in communal areas eg. corridors but will have a choice in classrooms.
  • Pupils will wear FULL school uniform at all times (apart from PE Kit on PE days). When wearing PE kit a blazer MUST be worn and CORRECT Philips kit.  Pupils who do not wear the correct uniform/kit will be sent home to change.

School attendance is mandatory from the week beginning March 8th (unless a statutory reason applies).  I do understand that some pupils will be nervous.  If your child is feeling anxious or nervous about returning to school please contact your Head of Year who can discuss any issues you may have.

Pupils should continue to bring a packed lunch to school every day and a bottle of water (no fizzy/energy drinks are permitted – they will be confiscated) apart from those eligible for a free school meal.

The return to school this time will be more challenging than the last. Not only have we been isolated for longer but we are also recommended to wear masks in lessons.  This will be personal choice.  It will be difficult for us all but I know that we can get through it together.  We will be setting out the new systems again in an extended form time the first full day pupils in a year group are back in school.  During the week beginning March 15th we will be starting our pupil wellbeing and support activities to aid the transition back into school.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely

Ms T Owen
