Update from Ms T Owen – Headteacher

3rd February 2021

Dear Parents/Carers

Re:  Update from Ms T Owen – Headteacher

I wanted to update you on a number of current issues.

Firstly, Year 11 pupils.  A number of you are, understandably, very concerned about the summer gradings and mock examinations.  As you may be aware the Government have been consulting on how this summer’s grades should be awarded to the year 11 pupils.  The consultation closed on Friday 29th January.  We are expecting an announcement around February 22nd and therefore, as a school, we will not make any decisions until then.  Please let me reassure you that if all pupils do return on March 8th we WILL NOT be immediately holding mock examinations.  We will allow pupils to settle back in, regain their self-confidence and then decide the next steps.  You will be made aware of all plans in advance and your son or daughter will be fully prepared for any mock examinations IF and WHEN we decide to do them.

The next area of concern is the mental health and wellbeing of pupils and staff.  Following our staff, pupil and parent surveys it has become clear that the vast majority of you do feel supported.  It is, however, also evident that everyone is feeling a great deal of stress and strain.  In order to try and address this we have decided to dedicate Monday 8th February to a “Mental Health and Physical Wellbeing Day”.  The normal timetable will be collapsed and the pupils will be given suggestions of mental health and physical wellbeing activities – all of which they can choose from.  It will also give pupils who have fallen behind on previously set work the chance to catch up.  Pupils who are in school will attend as normal but should wear their PE kit.

Finally, I would like to thank – in advance – staff and parents of Year 9 for the virtual Parents’ Evening which is due to take place tomorrow evening 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm.  Year 9 pupils are currently choosing their options and this will assist them in making their choices.  The last virtual Parents’ Evening was a great success and I fully expect this one to be the same.

Thank you for all your kind words and messages of support, they really do make a difference and I will write to you again once we have had further guidance from the Government regarding the full re-opening of schools.

Kind regards,

Yours sincerely

Ms T Owen
